Scott Ayling

Research Executive

I joined NEMS as a telephone interviewer in November 2002 to augment my student loan whilst at Teesside University, where I was studying Performing Arts.
I graduated in 2004, but enjoyed working at NEMS so much that I decided to stay on! In July 2008 I moved over to the Research Team as an Assistant, becoming a Research Executive a year later.
My main area of specialism is transport research and head up this sector within the research team. I have considerable experience in questionnaire design which embraces both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies.
I am passionate about Theatre, and most of my spare time is taken up with acting, singing and directing plays and musicals for several local theatre companies. My other passion is dogs; I share my home with my partner Billy, our greyhound Mollie and our lurchers, Jasper and Jack.

A selection of recent projects I have worked on:

Finding solutions to a particularly difficult and challenging car parking situation that has built up over many years
There can be few issues more likely to engender an opinion than car parking; a necessity but rarely with an easy solution. Bringing together our expertise in research; data analysis and modelling; and understanding of the issues both specific and in the wider economic context, can help you find the right solutions.
Impact on the economy of RET ferry fares
In 2008, a pilot scheme was introduced on specific ferry routes in Scotland, to evaluate the introduction of Road Equivalent Tariff (RET) fare structures for passengers, cars and commercial vehicles on publicly operated ferry services. This survey was to determine the impact of RET fare structures. 160 telephone interviews were undertaken among businesses on the islands and the results provided a quantified measure of impact on the local economy.
